Safraleine® (Givaudan) is a highly distinctive specialty perfumery ingredient developed by Givaudan, known for its powerful saffron, leathery, warm, spicy, and tobacco-like character. Rather than reproducing natural saffron literally, Safraleine® provides perfumers with a stylized and highly effective saffron-leather effect that can give a composition remarkable personality and depth.

Its odor profile is warm, dry, spicy, leathery, and saffron-like, accompanied by characteristic tobacco and slightly woody nuances. It has considerably more of a dark, textured leather character than a simple spice note, which makes it particularly useful when constructing sophisticated saffron and leather accords.

Safraleine® is especially valuable for the way it can transform a composition. In relatively restrained amounts, it works effectively as a Modifier, introducing a recognizable saffron-leather signature and adding warmth, dryness, and contrast. When given greater prominence, it can become an important structural element in leather, saffron, woody, amber, tobacco, and oriental-style accords.

It combines particularly well with rose and other florals, woody and ambery materials, oud-style accords, musks, tobacco effects, spices, and leather notes. In rose compositions, for example, it can introduce a sophisticated dry saffron-leather contrast, while in woody or amber structures it can contribute additional warmth and character.

Safraleine® and Safranal should not be considered interchangeable materials. Safranal is a specific chemical compound naturally associated with the aroma of saffron and emphasizes a penetrating, dry, aromatic saffron facet. Safraleine®, by contrast, is a Givaudan specialty ingredient with a pronounced saffron-leather, spicy and tobacco-like identity. For this reason, Safraleine® is often particularly interesting when the desired effect is not simply “saffron,” but rather a more complex saffron wrapped in leather, warmth and dark aromatic texture.

For a perfumer, its value lies in its ability to provide a recognizable signature rather than merely filling space in an accord. Safraleine® can turn saffron from a supporting spicy nuance into a distinctive leather-saffron theme with substantial olfactory character.
